Judge Appointed by Biden Prevents Trump from Rapidly Deporting Biden's Migrants

Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Deportation Plans for Immigrants

A federal judge appointed by Joe Biden has halted efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to quickly deport immigrants that entered the U.S. through a high-profile parole process established by Biden.

Judge Jia Cobb, serving on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, has ruled that Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is not allowed to immediately deport hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought into the country via this parole pipeline.

This case revolves around the Trump administration’s move to shut down Biden’s parole process, effectively dismissing immigration parole cases and sidestepping the usual procedures for removal.

“These individuals arrived at the U.S. border following established procedures put in place by the government. They were paroled into the country under these guidelines and were given a chance to present their claims for asylum or other legal relief,” the judge noted.

However, the government not only halted new arrivals through this program but also modified the parole process, limiting immigrants’ ability to seek relief, despite laws that prevent such administrative changes. This exposes them to swift removal.

The court concluded, “This stay will be granted. The actions taken by the agency exceed its legal authority and appear arbitrary.” The judge emphasized that those affected face significant harm from these government actions, preserving the status of all non-citizens paroled into the U.S. at any entry point until the lawsuit concludes.

In response, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin criticized the ruling, stating that Cobb is “blatantly ignoring the U.S. Supreme Court.”

She described the decision as “lawless and intolerable.” It’s worth noting that in 2020, the Supreme Court ruled that federal judges should not interfere with deportation efforts led by the Trump administration.

The Biden administration has facilitated the entry of over 530,000 immigrants from countries like Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela through the program often referred to as the CHNV parole pipeline.
