Federal Judge Orders Release of Detained Individuals

A federal judge has ordered the release of over 600 individuals who were detained during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Illinois. This decision comes from U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Cummings, who sided with legal representatives from the National Immigrant Justice Center and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). They argued that more than 3,000 arrests were made between June and October as part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Operation Midway Blitz, which specifically targeted undocumented immigrants in areas with sanctuary policies.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not provide any comments regarding the ruling.

Reports indicate that 615 detainees must be granted bail by noon on November 21. According to Mark Fleming, an attorney from the National Immigration Justice Center, while each is set to receive a bail amount of $615, it’s unclear how this process will unfold.

Fleming further noted that those eligible for release could be scattered nationwide. Additionally, Judge Cummings ruled previously that ICE agents had breached a consent decree concerning warrantless arrests in the Chicago area, known as the 2022 Castañon-Nava Settlement.

This crackdown on illegal immigration is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to address illegal immigration and violent crime in major cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Reports indicate that attacks on ICE agents have surged by 1,000% recently.

In a related operation, ICE agents collaborated with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to carry out a large-scale arrest of undocumented truck drivers. Meanwhile, Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced new measures to enhance protections for protesters, while also creating an “ICE-free zone.”
