Judge Denies Diddy’s Request for a New Trial

Judge Arun Subramanian has turned down rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs’ appeal for a new trial before his sentencing. The judge indicated that the evidence presented by the prosecution was “overwhelming” regarding Diddy’s involvement in charges related to prostitution.

In a statement, Subramanian pointed out that the government had established its case quite thoroughly. He mentioned, “That may be enough to dismiss Combs’ appeal on its own, but there are additional factors that also don’t favor him.”

Diddy’s defense argued that the evidence concerning sex trafficking and assault could potentially bias the jury. However, Judge Subramanian dismissed this claim, stating, “If the bias really existed, we’d expect the jury to convict on the most pertinent count before extending it to related charges.”

The rapper was convicted earlier, with two counts related to engaging in prostitution, including assault and sex trafficking. Now, he faces 10 to 20 years in prison for each count, while prosecutors are recommending a sentence of approximately 11 years.

Prosecutors argued that Diddy should receive a significant prison term, asserting that he “doesn’t show remorse” as detailed in a recent court submission. They noted, “Surprisingly, the defendant has acknowledged his violence during the trial, yet he now claims that his victim should bear some responsibility.”

Diddy’s legal team has suggested a 14-month sentence as they prepare for a hearing on October 3 regarding the charges. Having already spent 13 months in custody, his lawyers argue that Diddy has been adequately penalized for his actions.

They emphasize that he has suffered both physically and mentally, contending that further imprisonment would not serve a beneficial purpose. Instead, they assert that the focus should be on rehabilitation and reintegrating convicted individuals back into society. Diddy’s intentions post-release include repairing relationships and contributing positively to his community.

In a separate concern, Diddy’s former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, addressed the judge prior to the rapper’s conviction. She expressed her fears about potential retaliation from Diddy or his associates following his release, emphasizing her need for psychological support due to traumatic experiences linked to their past relationship.

She wrote, “I continue experiencing nightmares and flashbacks and currently require psychological care to manage my past.” Ventura revealed that her distress has led her to relocate her family away from New York to ensure their safety.
