Judge in the US stops Trump from sending troops to Portland

Federal Judge in Oregon Blocks Trump’s National Guard Deployment

A federal judge in Oregon has extended an emergency order that prevents President Donald Trump from deploying around 200 National Guard troops to Portland. This decision represents a temporary setback for the president’s plans to federalize National Guard support.

U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, who was appointed by Trump, granted a 14-day extension to keep the current temporary order, which was due to expire this weekend.

The judge’s ruling stops the immediate deployment of the Oregon National Guard, despite local officials arguing that the president’s depiction of the violence in Portland is exaggerated and doesn’t warrant federal intervention.

Judge Immergut expressed concern that Trump’s actions have been “out of touch with reality,” suggesting that federalizing the National Guard could confuse the boundaries between civilian and military power, which could harm the country.

The legal back-and-forth continues as attorneys for both the state of Oregon and the Trump administration await a ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Last week, the court heard oral arguments regarding the Trump administration’s appeal of the earlier decision.

Two of the three judges on the appellate panel, both appointed by Trump, indicated during discussions that the president has considerable discretion in deploying National Guard resources.

While no exact timeline was established for a decision, the justices assured both parties they would act as swiftly as possible.

As the debate unfolds further, the Trump administration is pushing to send National Guard troops to cities governed by Democrats, despite opposition stemming from local leaders.

Officials from the government claim the deployment is vital to address what they characterize as rising violent crime and to protect against disturbances linked to protests, including those against ICE activities.

This rebuttal comes as Oregon Attorney General Stacey Chaffin’s arguments seem to generate skepticism, particularly regarding Trump’s portrayal of violence being used to justify sending in the National Guard.

Democrats have responded by claiming that Trump’s rationale lacks accuracy and serves as a legal guise for an attempt to federalize cities led by Democratic administrations.

It’s anticipated that this issue could escalate to the Supreme Court if similar challenges regarding troop deployments continue to emerge.
