Trump’s Proposed Banquet Hall at the White House Under Scrutiny

As President Donald Trump moves forward with plans for a new banquet hall at the White House, federal judge Richard Leon has asked Justice Department attorneys to clarify the president’s authority regarding construction projects at the residence. The judge’s inquiry raised questions such as, “What authority does the president have to demolish the East Tower and build something in its place?” according to reports from the Washington Post.

Leon indicated that a ruling could come as soon as next month, adding that he would issue a decision in February, as noted by NBC News.

White House Comments on Naming and Funding

In response to reports suggesting Trump named the new ballroom after himself, attorney Thad Hoyer, representing the National Trust for Historic Preservation, contended that the president lacks the constitutional authority to proceed with demolishing the East Tower for this purpose, insisting, “He is not the owner.”

It appears the judge might be leaning towards halting the project entirely.

The White House responded on Friday. Justice Department attorney Yaakov Ross explained the decision to demolish the East Wing stemmed from structural issues. He stated, “The president did not want $400 million of taxpayer money to be used for this,” emphasizing that Trump aimed to utilize donations instead.

The project, initiated last year by Trump, was framed as being funded through private donations, avoiding taxpayer funding.

Details on Funding Sources

Trump expressed pride in being the first president to undertake this project “at zero cost to American taxpayers,” as he noted in an October statement. He described the White House Ballroom as being “privately funded by many generous patriots, great American businesses, and truly yours,” adding that it would serve future generations.
