A Wisconsin judge has dismissed a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Republican National Convention Coalition over the planned route of protests, ruling that the city of Milwaukee and the US Secret Service have the right to maintain a “heavy security perimeter.”

The decision was made on Tuesday, just one week before the Republican National Convention.

The lawsuit, filed a month ago, was brought by protesters who want to be “within sight and sound” of the convention site.

In Tuesday’s ruling, the judge found the defendants had “legitimate national security and other government interests.”

Organizers of the demonstration say the verdict is unacceptable.

“There’s absolutely no reason why the city can’t be with us and march. If they’re not going to be with us, then we’re just going to take the ball away and do it ourselves,” said Omar Flores, co-chair of the Republican National Convention 2024 March.

The coalition had previously said it would march within “sight and hearing” of the venue regardless of the security situation.

Protesters have two days to decide whether to continue with legal action.
