Judge sets date for sentencing in Trump hush-money trial, suggests no jail time

Judge in hush money case against President-elect Donald Trump announced He announced a sentencing date on Friday and indicated he would not face any prison time.

Judge Juan M. Marchan said President Trump would be sentenced on January 10, about a week before the inauguration, but granted him “unconditional release” with no jail time, probation or fines. suggested that it was a possibility.

Trump was found guilty in May on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the New York case.

The judge said the interests of justice would only be served “by bringing this matter to an end.”

Marchand had previously rejected arguments from Trump's lawyers that the lawsuit should be thrown out based on the president's immunity claims. He wrote that the evidence related to “entirely unofficial conduct” and was not subject to immunity.

Trump was found guilty in May of all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a New York case related to hush money allegedly paid to adult film worker Stormy Daniels. She claimed that then-candidate Trump was paid to remain silent about accusations that he had an affair with her. He denied her claims.

In a statement, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee criticized the announcement on social media, calling it “an absolutely outrageous act of law.”

“Judge Marchand is a disgrace to the court.” statement continued.

Special Counsel Jack Smith closed two federal lawsuits against Trump after he won the presidential election in November. One case concerned classified documents seized by the FBI from his Mar-a-Lago mansion, and the other related to President Trump's efforts to overturn the official results of the 2020 election.

Trump will be sworn in for a second time as president on January 20, becoming the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted felon to be elected president.
