Judi Dench Stays Close to Kevin Spacey and Forgives Harvey Weinstein

Dame Judi Dench Reflects on Forgiveness at 91

As Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench celebrates her 91st birthday, she finds herself grappling with the implications of her blindness, which has led her to retire from acting. Despite this, she continues to identify as a practicing Quaker, a faith centered on forgiveness—a stance that seems to contrast with the steadfast approach of the #MeToo movement.

Actor Kevin Spacey, who has faced multiple court decisions in his favor, remains a controversial figure in Hollywood. Many in the industry, particularly those with left-leaning views, still refuse to absolve him or lift the restrictions placed on his career. Nevertheless, Dench maintains her friendship with Spacey’s former co-star.

“Kevin’s innocence has been established. I’ve heard he plans to reach out to me via email,” she noted, recalling how Spacey showed her kindness after her husband died in 2001.

Dench also had a connection to Harvey Weinstein, a disgraced producer and convicted rapist who was instrumental in her film career. While she has condemned his actions, she now argues that it’s time to move towards forgiveness.

“I’ve seen snippets of a film where Harvey appears with two sticks, and you can’t help but think… I worked closely with him but, fortunately, never encountered anything like that,” she mentioned, expressing her sympathy for the victims involved.

“I think he’s done his time,” she added. “For me, it’s personal; it’s about forgiveness.”

Forgiveness, in her view, is ultimately for oneself. It doesn’t equate to excusing the past. While she understands the firm stance of some in the #MeToo movement, she believes such rigidity can be detrimental both to individuals and society.

It’s crucial to distinguish true victims of sexual abuse. Their experiences are beyond comprehension, and no one should dictate how they feel. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

How many victories in court will it take for Kevin Spacey to be welcomed back? Or how long until Harvey Weinstein can hope for redemption? Perhaps they should be given the chance to apologize and return to their lives. People need opportunities for redemption.

Harvey Weinstein may symbolize the worst aspects of our society—his political views, his crimes, and his personality, if I’m being honest. But if he completes his prison term, isn’t it fair to consider a fresh start? Admittedly, not for those he wronged, but socially, shouldn’t we recognize the completion of his debt?
