Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the United States.

He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of conspiracy to disseminate classified information and is set to return to his native Australia.

Politico reported:

Lawyers for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and the US government reached an agreement this week to allow Assange to return to his native Australia, ending more than a decade of legal battle after he pleaded guilty to felony charges of conspiring to disseminate classified information.

The agreement means Assange will face a 62-month sentence, matching the time he has already served.

NPR reported:

According to newly filed court documents, Assange is preparing to plead guilty this week in U.S. federal court on the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean, to one count of conspiring to obtain and disclose national defense information.

Under the terms of the agreement, Assange will serve a 62-month sentence, the same time he served in Britain’s Belmarsh prison while resisting extradition to the U.S. After his trial later this week, he is expected to be released and return to his native Australia.

Australian leaders have long been lobbying the Biden administration to drop the criminal charges, and President Biden acknowledged at a press conference in April that US authorities were “considering” such a step.
