Julian Assange Talks About a Documentary on His Life at Cannes

Julian Assange’s Recovery and Documentary Promotion at Cannes Festival

Julian Assange appears to be doing well following his release from prison last year. His wife shared insights with AFP before the premiere of a documentary that showcases lesser-known footage of whistleblowers.

Attending the Cannes Festival, Assange is there to promote a film by director Eugene Jalecki. Although he hasn’t addressed the media directly, Stella Assange commented, “I’ll talk when I’m ready.” She emphasized their life in Australia, saying, “Julian loves the outdoors, and he has been recovering well, both physically and mentally.”

Assange was freed from a high-security prison in the UK in June after reaching a plea agreement with the US government regarding his publication of sensitive military and diplomatic secrets through WikiLeaks. Prior to his release, he spent five years contesting extradition and another seven years inside the Ecuadorian embassy where he sought asylum.

Jalecki’s film, titled “The Six Billion Man,” aims to clarify the narrative around Assange. He remarked, “I think Julian Assange has damaged the principle of transparency concerning what corporations and governments do in private.” He added that those willing to sacrifice for their beliefs exhibit heroic traits.

The documentary includes personal footage provided by Stella, who was also a legal advisor for WikiLeaks. The couple welcomed two children during their time at the embassy. It also presents testimonies from individuals who assisted WikiLeaks, including security guards who alleged they had collaborated with American intelligence.

Notable figures like Pamela Anderson and Edward Snowden are expected to appear in the film as well. Jalecki has responded to criticism directed at Assange, particularly regarding the risk posed by unedited US diplomatic cables that could jeopardize informants’ safety.

He also dismisses claims that WikiLeaks has ties to Russian intelligence concerning the leaked Democratic emails during the 2016 US presidential election. Jalecki stated that, aside from Democratic allegations, he has seen no evidence linking WikiLeaks to Russia. Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who granted Assange asylum, is set to attend the film’s premiere.

Interestingly, Jalecki recently received his first Golden Globe for a documentary at Cannes, which adds another layer to his involvement in pivotal narratives.
