Juliana Stratton secures victory in Illinois Senate Democratic primary, an important measure of Pritzker's influence

Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton Wins Democratic Primary

In a closely watched Democratic primary, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton secured a significant victory on Tuesday, paving the way to succeed the retiring Senator Dick Durbin. This race is seen as a crucial test of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s influence in 2028.

Pritzker, who has been a staunch supporter of Stratton, has often celebrated her progressive accomplishments, describing her as a “warrior” for the state.

The primary evolved into a competitive three-way contest involving Stratton, as well as Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly. Stratton garnered about 40% of the vote, according to the Associated Press, with Krishnamoorthi trailing at 33% and Kelly at 18%.

“I’m really proud to have worked alongside her in the past two elections and over the last seven years,” Pritzker remarked on election night. “She’s a remarkable, honest person who truly cares for this state. I’m grateful for our shared accomplishments.”

Krishnamoorthi, who had been the top Democrat on the House Select Committee on China before resigning in January, faced off against Kelly, a former chair of the Illinois Democratic Party.

Campaign discussions largely centered on responses to Donald Trump’s stringent immigration measures. Stratton advocated for completely abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while Krishnamoorthi called for reforms to dismantle what he termed “Trump’s ICE.” Kelly even introduced articles of impeachment against then-Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, prior to her firing on March 5.

Pritzker, with his substantial wealth, backed Stratton financially, contributing at least $5 million to the Illinois Future PAC and providing another $14 million to support her campaign.

Meanwhile, Krishnamoorthi’s backing from the cryptocurrency sector resulted in a staggering fundraising total of about $30.5 million, which included $19 million raised from his House campaign. This financial backing overshadowed Stratton’s contributions, which amounted to approximately $4 million.

Pritzker’s involvement in the Senate race has not come without controversy, as some party members criticized his perceived interference. Representative Yvette Clarke, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and a supporter of Kelly, expressed concerns about the governor’s approach, stating it felt excessive.

In response, Pritzker asserted, “I want a black woman to be a U.S. senator. I’m focusing solely on finding the best candidate.” He also mentioned his commitment to supporting diverse communities and candidates throughout Illinois.

As it stands, the Senate currently has five black members, including two women.

Pritzker has remained reticent about his potential aspirations for 2028, typically ranking low in polls among prospective candidates. He insists he is concentrating on his current duties and is pursuing a third term later this year, but he hasn’t entirely dismissed the idea of running for president.

Looking ahead, Stratton will compete against former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Don Tracy, who won the Republican Senate primary on Tuesday, in the general election this November. In heavily Democratic Illinois, the party is likely to remain strong.
