Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman, shares how casting Burt Ward as Robin transformed everything.

For Julie Newmar, portraying Catwoman in the ’60s Batman series was an experience full of joyful memories, especially the bond formed on set with fellow actors. She expressed her admiration for Burt Ward, who played Robin, describing him as a key part of her time on the show. Newmar starred alongside Adam West, who took on the iconic role of Batman.

“Casting Burt was a key decision made by producer William Dozier and 20th Century Fox,” Newmar remarked. She added that Ward’s admiration for West was evident and came from a place of respect, not rivalry.

Ward, now 80, shared that he appreciated all the actors who played Catwoman, saying, “Each brought something unique.” The show, which ran for three seasons from 1966 to 1968, featured Newmar in 13 episodes, while other actresses like Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt also portrayed the character.

Ward reminisced about the show, noting that he idolized the stars he worked with. “Every episode had someone I looked up to,” he said. “They were all superstars.” It was a time when actors were punctual and professional, and Ward appreciated that structure as a young performer.

The friendship between Ward and West blossomed during filming and continued long after. “We’d just sit and laugh about old times,” Ward recalled, emphasizing how much he cherished those moments.

Unfortunately, West passed away in 2017 at the age of 88, leaving a significant void for many. “I miss him dearly. He was such a wonderful person.” Now, Ward dedicates his time to animal rescue efforts.

Newmar, who made her Broadway debut at 19 and is well-known for her famous Catwoman costume, recently reflected on how she quickly landed the role. She didn’t have to audition, as the production was in a rush. Her brother even urged her to take the opportunity.

Her relationship with Batman and Robin remains meaningful. “They have grown in importance to me over time. I truly believe there hasn’t been a better Batman since,” Newmar stated. Her legacy in Hollywood is celebrated, and she continues to engage with her fans through social media, emphasizing health and positivity in her later years.
