July 4 fireworks set New Jersey forest fire that burned thousands of acres

TABERNACLE, N.J. — A fast-spreading forest fire sparked by fireworks has burned thousands of acres in southern New Jersey, according to authorities.

The New Jersey Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Sunday that a “pyrotechnic device” Wharton State Forest The fire broke out late on the night of July 4th.

Officials said Sunday that the fire has burned an estimated 4,000 acres but is believed to be 75% contained. CBS

The fire was spotted burning near Apple Pie Hill and Batna campgrounds from a fire tower just after 9am on Friday and evacuations were carried out as a precautionary measure.

Officials urged anyone with information about the fire to call the state park police tip line.

The Forestry and Fire Protection Division led the investigation in coordination with the State Park Police, the State Fire Safety Division and the Burlington County Fire Marshal’s Office, officials said.

Officials said Sunday that the fire has burned an estimated 4,000 acres but is believed to be 75% contained.

Officials had earlier said firefighters were battling the blaze with a backfire operation, burning areas ahead of the main fire to stop the flames from spreading.

Several roads and trails were closed.
