Jurgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool FC, expressed his condolences in a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident early Thursday morning.
Klopp, who managed Jota for four seasons, shared his shock at the news on Instagram. He wrote, “This is the moment I’m struggling with! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it!”
He continued, “We are heartbroken to hear of Diogo and his brother Andre’s passing. Diogo was not only a fantastic player but also a dear friend, a loving husband, and a devoted father. We deeply miss you! My prayers and thoughts are with [Diogo’s wife] Root, their children, family, friends, and everyone who cared for them! Rest in peace – with love.”
Jota and Silva, both professional soccer players, were found dead after their vehicle veered off the road on the Zamora highway in northwestern Spain.
The 28-year-old Jota, originally from Portugal, joined Liverpool in 2020 and was a player under Klopp until the manager departed in May 2024. Before his time at Liverpool, he played for Wolves (2017-21) and previous teams in Portugal, including Paços (2014-16) and Porto (2016-17).
Arne Slot, the current Liverpool manager, also commented on the tragic event, describing the accident as “an unimaginable loss.” He shared, “What should I say? When the shock and pain are overwhelming, what can anyone really say at times like this? I wish I had the right words, but I know I wouldn’t.”
Slot emphasized the collective feelings of those who loved Jota and Andre, saying, “All I have is the sense that many share about the people we love dearly and the families we care for.”
During the 2024-25 season, Slot coached Jota, a time when Liverpool celebrated winning the Premier League title. He reflected, “My first thought wasn’t about the role of a soccer manager. They are fathers, sons, brothers; they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva, who have faced such unimaginable losses.”
