Jury in Colorado decides on $205 million compensation after the death of a young girl on a theme park ride

Major Verdict in Theme Park Tragedy

A Colorado jury recently awarded $205 million to the family of a six-year-old girl after she tragically fell over 100 feet from a ride at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. This verdict, reached on Friday in Garfield County District Court, marks one of the largest wrongful death settlements for an individual plaintiff in the state’s history.

The child, Wongel Estifanos, was at the amusement park with her family during Labor Day weekend in 2021 when the incident occurred on the Haunted Mine Drop ride. Reports indicate that she wasn’t properly secured in her seat before the ride began.

Witness accounts and court documents suggest that despite a warning alarm being triggered, the operator chose to proceed with the ride. The Haunted Mine Drop is designed to drop riders down a dark shaft and simulate a ghostly experience, which, tragically, became life-threatening for Wongel.

Following the incident, the ride was permanently shut down. The family pursued legal action to uncover the circumstances surrounding Wongel’s death, arguing that the park had ignored safety concerns raised by visitors and acted negligently in their operations.

Investigations revealed multiple mistakes by the staff led to the fatal incident, including a failure to secure her seat belt properly before the ride commenced. The family’s lawsuit also claimed that the ride’s operations contradicted safety standards, calling into question the accountability of both the amusement park and the ride’s manufacturer.

In a statement, a representative from Glenwood Caverns expressed condolences to Wongel’s family and acknowledged the need to explore all options moving forward, while also emphasizing their commitment to guest safety.

Although criminal charges were not pursued against the park, the civil trial provided a platform for the Estifanos family to seek justice. They expressed gratitude to the community for their support throughout this challenging process.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about safety regulations at amusement parks and the accountability of operators when it comes to ensuring the well-being of their guests.
