Jury selection for the trial concerning the assassination attempt on Trump by Ryan Routh is ongoing.

Trial Selection for Ryan Rouse Resumes in Florida

The selection of jurors is set to continue in Fort Pierce, Florida, for the federal trial of Ryan Rouse, who faces charges for allegedly attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at the West Palm Beach Golf Club in September 2024.

A total of three groups, each consisting of 60 prospective jurors, will participate in this selection process. During this phase, the prosecutor and Rouse, who is representing himself, will ask various questions to assess the jurors’ impartiality. The selection is anticipated to start on Monday and conclude by Wednesday.

Process of Selecting Jurors in Rouse’s Trial

Ultimately, this jury selection will result in 12 jurors and 4 alternates being chosen for the trial.

The initial group of 60 jurors appeared on Monday. Their discussions with Rouse and the prosecutors covered a variety of topics, including the ongoing war in Gaza, a controversial claim about the US acquiring Greenland, and hypothetical reactions to encountering turtles on the road while driving.

Judge Irene Cannon, appointed by Trump, dismissed some of Rouse’s inquiries, labeling them as “political indictment” and stating that they were irrelevant to the selection process.

“None of the questions on your list have anything to do with it. They are off base and not related to the choice of jurors,” Cannon remarked.

Background on the Assassination Attempt Charges

Prosecutors allege that Rouse, a 59-year-old construction worker, had been planning to assassinate Trump for several weeks. They claim that he attempted to use a rifle aimed at Trump when Secret Service agents intervened on September 15, 2024. After the agents fired, Rouse reportedly abandoned both his weapon and the scene.

Rouse’s Charges and Trial Timeline

Rouse faces multiple federal charges, including attempted murder of a presidential candidate and several firearms violations. If convicted, he could face life in prison. Rouse has pleaded not guilty to all charges and continues to assert his innocence.

The opening statements for the trial are expected to begin on Thursday, with prosecutors ready to present their case shortly after. The court has allocated four weeks for the trial, which is anticipated to conclude by October 3rd.
