MSNBC contributor Sam Stein called President Joe Biden a “strange historical figure” on Sunday while discussing his son Hunter Biden's pardon decision on his podcast.
Biden issued a statement Sunday night saying he pardoned Hunter after the younger Biden was convicted of three felony firearms charges in June. On “The Bulwark,” host and libertarian political strategist Tim Miller questioned “where” Democrats “must stand” and said Biden's decisions will affect him throughout his term. It got the two of them discussing how it affected his legacy.
“They don't have legs, that's all. But that didn't stop Trump from pardoning all the J6ers he wanted anyway. So, again, we're not that far apart. I don't think so. I just look at it a little differently. To me, this is probably a stupid step that Biden felt he had to take.”
“But ultimately, it does not irreparably damage our norms. Our norms have been shattered,” Stein added. “Right now, like we're picking up, we're staring at the ashes and we're like, 'Oh, why would he?' But it's like, yeah, we've got a big pile of shit in our arms. It's like he's adding a little bit more.”
Miller went on to express his dissatisfaction with Biden, pointing to a recent photo of the president smiling as he met with President-elect Donald Trump at the White House last month to discuss next month's executive transition. “I'm so mad at Joe Biden right now.” He's already painted a picture of stupid happiness, happiness, joy, joy with Trump. I like the whole thing. I don't know. “I think Joe Biden has done some unimaginably selfish things this year,” Miller said.
clock:
“I think if you had a list of people that you would want to blame for the current predicament that we're in, obviously the Republicans would all be at the top, Mitch McConnell. Top,” Miller continued. “The fact that they didn't do that means they didn't impeach and convict him. But when you get past the Republican Party, you don't think of anyone.”
Stein told the host that although Biden defeated Trump in 2020, he has made “very baseless and selfish” decisions throughout his four years in office.
“He's a very strange historical figure, isn't he? On the one hand, he's obviously a very sympathetic guy; on the other hand. [hand]Joe Biden beat him in 2020, so we should recognize that he beat Trump for about four years without Trump,” Stein said.
“What got us out of the pandemic was just a series of very unwarranted and selfish actions, and we end up here.” Stein continued. “Again, it's not a straight line. A lot of people could have helped. A lot of people could have prevented this.”
In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris' defeat, Democrats are questioning where her campaign went wrong after losing both the Electoral College and the popular vote. While some have criticized Harris' comments about the former president, some, like Democratic California Rep. Nancy Pelosi, have argued that the party would have chosen a nominee if Biden had resigned before July 21. Some have suggested that an open primary could have been held to strengthen the party.
In Biden's statement about Hunter, the president claimed the lawsuit against his son was filed solely because he is Biden. But ahead of the sentencing, Biden and his staff had repeatedly assured the public they had no intention of pardoning their son, saying in June that they were “pleased” with the conviction and “we're not going to do anything.” . ”
