Justice Department agrees to $1.2 million settlement with Michael Flynn in lawsuit

DOJ Settles with Michael Flynn Over Russian Contacts

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday that it has reached a settlement with Michael Flynn, who served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser. This conclusion comes after a prolonged legal battle concerning his interactions with Russian diplomats during the Mueller investigation.

Though official court documents do not disclose the specific financial terms, reports suggest that Flynn will receive approximately $1.2 million from the government to settle the case. This resolution marks the end of a lengthy legal saga stemming from the inquiry into Russian election interference.

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, admitted to making false statements to the FBI regarding his discussions with the Russian ambassador to the United States back in December 2017.

In the broader context, these conversations involved Russia’s reaction to U.S. sanctions and various UN Security Council resolutions relating to Israel. The charges originated from Robert Mueller’s investigation into any potential collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russian entities.

Mueller, the former FBI director who oversaw this investigation, accused several Trump associates, including Flynn, of various offenses, although his final report did not find evidence of a criminal conspiracy.

Flynn later attempted to retract his guilty plea, claiming that federal prosecutors were acting maliciously. Fast forward to 2019, and he had changed his plea to not guilty regarding alleged FBI misconduct.

In late 2020, he received a pardon from President Trump, but in 2023, Flynn filed a lawsuit asserting that he suffered from unfair prosecution, demanding at least $50 million in damages. He contended that this case, brought by what he labeled as “virulently anti-Trump leadership” within the FBI, had cost him millions of dollars in business opportunities and potential income.

Under the previous administration, efforts were made to dismiss Flynn’s case. However, under the current Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has criticized the Russia investigation, the DOJ has shifted its stance. The settlement has been characterized by the DOJ as a key step towards addressing perceived historical injustices. Authorities have stated they will hold accountable those responsible to prevent the “weaponization of the federal government” in the future.

Details provided in the settlement notice indicate that upon Flynn’s confirmation of receipt, the lawsuit will be dismissed permanently, and the claims will not be allowed to be filed again. Both parties will cover their own legal expenses, and the court will be without jurisdiction over the agreement.

Fox News Digital has reached out for further comments from the DOJ.
