Justice Department reveals record $14.6 billion health care fraud crackdown

Major Healthcare Fraud Charges Announced

On Monday, the Justice Department unveiled criminal charges against over 300 people linked to a massive healthcare fraud scheme with intended losses exceeding $14.6 billion.

The DOJ reported that the 2025 national health fraud crackdown resulted in charges against 324 defendants across 50 federal districts. Among them are 96 medical professionals, including doctors, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists.

These individuals have allegedly participated in a scheme that leads to losses totaling $14.6 billion. The government has seized upwards of $245 million, which includes cash, luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and various other assets.

As part of this initiative, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have suspended an additional $4 billion in false claims. Additionally, a civil settlement with 106 defendants has been reached, amounting to $34.3 million.

“We view the theft of public funds as a serious crime affecting everyone. Today marks a significant moment with the DOJ and our federal partners releasing results from the largest medical fraud investigation in their history,” stated a representative on a social platform.

“This outcome matters. The narrative is troubling. And we are only scratching the surface. If you choose to steal from the public or betray your duty, be assured, we will pursue you as well,” they added.

Joseph Nosera Jr., a U.S. attorney from the Eastern District of New York, noted that 11 individuals connected to a Russia-based “cross-border criminal organization” were also charged as part of a sweep named “Operation Gold Rush.”

In this particular case, the defendants allegedly gained millions by acquiring various durable medical device companies, allowing them to submit claims to Medicare and Medicare supplementary insurance. By taking control of these companies, they are accused of filing billions in false medical claims.
