Justice Department Expands Prosecutorial Efforts in Minnesota

The Justice Department is dispatching a significant number of prosecutors to Minnesota to assist with fraud and immigration-related cases, according to two federal officials. This initiative aims to bolster local efforts in addressing these issues.

Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol Commander, mentioned that the support from prosecutors in the Twin Cities will be crucial. A new prosecutor is expected to take a firm approach on immigration cases, aligning with the policies set by President Trump.

“Prosecutors are backing us from various departments, whether it’s the Department of Justice or Homeland Security,” Bovino noted. “We’re increasing our numbers here with additional attorneys and prosecutors coming into the area.”

He also warned, “If anyone thinks about assaulting a federal officer, they should reconsider. We’ve got excellent prosecutors in Minneapolis.”

ICE Enforcement Amid Rising Tensions

Bovino confirmed that operations from the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are expanding to areas like Minneapolis and St. Paul, with hundreds more federal agents being deployed to the Twin Cities. He urged undocumented individuals in the vicinity to use the CBP Home app, stressing that there are thousands of agents ready to carry out their mission.

However, federal agents in Minneapolis have been experiencing ongoing harassment from anti-ICE protesters. Despite this, Bovino noted that participants in these protests still seem determined, often believing that immigration crackdowns are primarily targeting violent offenders.

Recent Shootings Spark Outrage

Following a recent incident that escalated tensions, a 37-year-old woman named Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by ICE agents during a federal operation. Officials claimed that Good attempted to drive her car toward an agent, but this assertion has been challenged by her family and local leaders. The incident has intensified scrutiny on federal actions and led to increased clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.

Community concerns about access to the neighborhood have also been voiced, with numerous calls made to city officials asking for a fence that was erected to be removed. Although city supervisors stated that a memorial created by local residents would stay, they emphasized the need to keep the surrounding streets clear for emergency access.

Local Leadership Responds

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed strong discontent following the shooting, calling for ICE to cease operations in the city. He rejected federal explanations for the incident, criticizing the disruption and potential risks to public safety that he believes federal agents bring to the area.
