DOJ Files Lawsuit Against Kansas City Public Schools Over Gender Transitions

The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated a significant lawsuit against the public schools in Kansas City, Kansas. The complaint alleges that the district has enabled students to undergo social gender transitions without notifying or obtaining consent from their parents. This has raised some serious concerns, to say the least.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, representing the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, criticized these unannounced transitions in schools. She pointed out possible violations of both the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA).

According to the DOJ, these laws are there to “safeguard parental rights, including the rights to access and oversee information collected and maintained about their children in public schools.”

In a statement on Tuesday, Dhillon passionately defended parents’ rights to guide their children’s upbringing, condemning public schools that she believes foist radical gender ideologies on students without family involvement in pivotal decisions.

“Parental rights are paramount in the operation of America’s public schools, and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools does not know children better than their own parents,” Dhillon asserted. “The Department will not tolerate school districts playing fast and loose with federal law in the service of radical gender ideology.”

Dhillon later expressed her enthusiasm about the lawsuit through a social media post, describing it as a groundbreaking action.

“[The DOJ] files first-of-its-kind suit against Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools for secretly helping kids “transition” genders at school—behind parents’ backs,” she wrote. “No consent, no notice, just a hidden policy—violating FERPA & PPRA. [DOJ Civil Rights Division] is taking it to court!”

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon echoed these sentiments, praising the Trump administration’s focus on upholding federal laws that protect parental rights and prevent schools from imposing ideological views on students.

“For decades, schools operated with little accountability… allowing some districts to cut parents out of deeply personal matters involving their own children,” McMahon explained. “That era is over. The Trump Administration is enforcing these laws at an unprecedented scale and making clear that schools cannot hide sensitive information from parents.”

U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser for the District of Kansas emphasized the necessity of cooperation between schools and parents, stating that withholding information can damage trust.

“This lawsuit should not come as a surprise,” Kriegshauser remarked. “Public education functions effectively only when schools and parents engage in a genuine partnership. When schools withhold information from parents, they undermine trust.”
