Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) respected the court’s decision, emphasizing the importance of following the judge’s orders as President Trump and his allies did.
US District Judge James Boasberg rejected Trump administration lawyers’ efforts to halt or spin a flight carrying Venezuelan immigrants that landed in El Salvador over the weekend.
“Our practice over 236 years has been to respect the court’s decision or appeal to the superior court. I believe in the pillars of separation of powers and checking and balance in the constitution,” Bacon wrote. Wednesday’s post cites an article from Politico mentioning the GOP effort’s response.
Trump called for invoking the 1798 Alien and Sedition Acts and is considering a massive deportation program, a wartime law. The administration also argued that the judge’s orders do not apply to planes that have already left the country. As Trump tested the constitutional limitations of his power, Republican lawmakers were divided between supporting the president and deferring to the court’s interpretation.Rep. Donald Trump Jr. has also jumped into the fray, slamming the judge.
“If the president does not have the right to throw or deport murderers or other criminals, our country is destined to fall into great trouble and fail because we want to leave our country and a radical left-leaning judge to take on the role of president!” he wrote shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
