Justin Fields experiences recent setback with Jets following toe injury

Justin Fields participated in the 11-on-11 drill on Monday, though he wasn’t fully involved after injuring his right toe last week.

Details about his involvement were somewhat unclear.

“He was limited, but we restricted him in a way that we intended,” Glenn mentioned.

This seems mostly to relate to how plays were called.

During practice, Fields didn’t attempt any runs; his throws were mostly quick and straightforward, without much movement around him.

Maybe this was a precaution to avoid aggravating his injury. He was involved in one hit from Byron Cowart but otherwise appeared solid during the team drill.

“He made some good throws,” Glenn noted. “When Justin fully returns, he’ll really show what he can do. He’s improving; he understands the game better.”

It’s crucial for Fields, who has dealt with multiple offensive systems over recent years while adjusting to Tanner Engstrand’s scheme, to get as many reps as possible with the Jets.

The Jets don’t have a quarterback competition at the moment; they are counting on Fields, especially after he signed a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason.

“He’s eager to learn every day,” receiver Tyler Johnson said about Fields. “You can see how invested he is in practice and team meetings.”

Offensive lineman Gus Hartwig, unfortunately, collapsed due to a severe knee injury, which Glenn confirmed was concerning.
