Justin Fields Embraces New Role with Jets

This year’s training camp feels quite different for Jets quarterback Justin Fields compared to last season.

Instead of competing for a position, he’s fully aware that he’s the starting quarterback.

Since signing in March, the Jets have made it clear he’s their number one choice. That’s a significant shift from the previous year, where he was vying for his job against Russell Wilson while with the Steelers.

After the first practice of camp, Fields expressed a sense of ease, stating, “I don’t think there’s much to worry about. Last year was… well, it was a strange position. But now, you just know where you are. You’re focused on improving and leading the team, and that’s all that matters.”

To build rapport and refine chemistry, Fields invited some teammates to Florida for workouts during the break between spring activities and training camp.

He emphasized the importance of taking time to understand his new teammates, not just speeding through drills.

Coach Aaron Glenn has noted Fields’ reliability, praising his consistent performance.

“He’s keeping the same energy from OTAs through training camp,” Glenn remarked. “You can really see his growth. If he continues doing the work, he won’t feel the pressure from anyone behind him.”

Recently, the Jets extended the contracts of WR Garrett Wilson and CB Sauce Gardner for four years, a notable move even with Glenn still new to head coaching.

When questioned about the timing of these decisions, Glenn replied, “Movies don’t lie. You get a sense of who the players are through observation—how they work, how they respond to challenges. Those two are crucial to our team.”

Additionally, the Jets have signed Samuel Jackson and activated LB Aaron Smith from the NFI list.
