Just two days after raising concerns, Justin Fields returned with some positive news.
At Jets practice on Saturday, he participated in 7-on-7 drills, as well as individual workouts.
Despite having an incident where he was stepped on and had to exit practice on Thursday, he seemed to move well on Saturday.
In the 7-on-7 session, Fields went 6 for 6, which included a nicely placed touchdown pass to a sprinting Tyler Johnson.
In addition to Johnson, Fields connected with Garrett Wilson (twice), Xavier Gipson, Brandon Smith, and Arianne Smith.
However, he didn’t take part in the full 11-on-11 drills.
“I thought he did a good job during the 7-on-7,” coach Aaron Glenn commented. “He’s still got some work to do before we take him there fully. We have to ensure he’s following the proper protocols.”
Glenn emphasized that Saturday’s practice was particularly crucial and served as a valuable assessment for the team.
“It’s a very important day for us as a team,” Glenn said. “Typically, after three days of practice, the fourth day involves a two-hour session.”
“This has always been one of my favorite practices. I love seeing how the players respond. They were aware of what to expect.”
Wil MacDonald IV started training camp strong and continued to impress on Saturday. His speed as an edge rusher is well recognized, and he demonstrated his strength by bull rushing past Armand Membou for a sack during the 11-on-11 drills.
This was a technique MacDonald hadn’t utilized much in his first two seasons, but Glenn believes it has always been part of his skill set—suggesting that his prior coaching staff hadn’t tapped into it fully.
“It’s about coaching,” Glenn explained. “He’s capable of that. You said he didn’t do it last year, but now you’re seeing him execute it. It comes down to coaching, plain and simple.”
