Will Justin Haak Seek Revenge Against NYCFC?
Justin Haak, who recently left New York City FC for LA Galaxy, acknowledges that facing his former team will be “strange.” After unsuccessful contract talks with NYCFC during the offseason, he decided to embrace a new chapter in Los Angeles.
“It’s definitely going to feel weird playing against them, especially since it’s the first game of the season,” Haak shared ahead of the matchup. “I think I’ll be a bit more motivated for this game, but, honestly, it’s just added motivation on top of what’s already an exciting season opener.”
Haak signed a one-year deal with the Galaxy back in December, which includes an option that extends to June 2027.
This departure was significant for NYCFC, as they lost a promising talent who had grown through their academy system and had a pivotal role in last year’s run to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Leaving New York wasn’t straightforward for Haak; he mentioned that the desire to “try something new” influenced his decision to join the Galaxy. He expressed frustration with how the contract negotiations were managed, stating that they caused “a great deal of damage.”
“I don’t think New York City was especially proactive until the season’s end,” Haak reflected. “They shot us an offer, but there was nothing in it that made me think, ‘Wow, this is an offer I must accept!’ It felt more like they were just doing the bare minimum until realizing other teams were interested.”
There was an attempt by Athletic Director Todd Dunivant to reach out to Haak. However, by that time, Haak had made up his mind about his future.
“I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone a bit because I’ve been in New York my entire life,” he admitted. “It wasn’t an easy choice to leave. If they had presented me with a compelling offer, I probably would have stayed.”
Haak’s time in New York was filled with respect for his teammates and coaches. “From the locker room to the coaching staff, I have nothing but good things to say. Still, I think the way they handled the situation was a huge blow.”
Now donning the Galaxy colors, he finds himself in a familiar position, switching between center back and midfield. He has already played in both roles during pre-season and feels quite at home in either position.
“We have a really strong group here in the Galaxy,” Haak noted. “We’ve got the potential to do something special.”
Even though he’s no longer a part of NYCFC, Haak remains a supporter from afar, humorously stating that his connection to the club will last long after his playing days.
In a message to his fans, he expressed his gratitude for their unwavering support. “I really appreciate everything they did for me during my time there. Except for this weekend, I’ll always be rooting for NYCFC,” he said. “But beyond that, I’ll always stand by them.”
