Justin Haak officially leaves NYCFC for a deal with LA Galaxy

Justin Haak Joins Los Angeles Galaxy

Justin Haak is no longer with New York City FC. The club confirmed his move to Los Angeles Galaxy on Monday, following an emotional farewell post he shared on social media over the weekend.

Haak’s new deal in Los Angeles is a one-year guaranteed contract, running through the end of the 2026 MLS season, with an option for the club that extends until June 2027. This timing aligns with MLS’s planned shift to a summer-to-spring calendar.

Despite NYCFC’s efforts to keep him, which included offering a more lucrative contract than other interested teams, Haak made the decision to leave, as confirmed by a source familiar with the situation.

Todd Dunivant, the club’s new athletic director set to officially begin his role in the new year, was involved in the attempts to retain Haak in New York.

During his time with NYCFC, Haak made 111 appearances in various competitions and was part of the 2021 team that claimed the MLS Cup. At just 24 years old and a native of Brooklyn, he has grown into a crucial player for the club, notably scoring the sole goal in the Eastern Conference finals, although they lost to Inter Miami.

In a statement, NYCFC expressed gratitude for Haak’s contributions to the team and the broader New York community, wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Haak began his journey with NYCFC’s academy at the U14 level and signed a professional contract in 2019. As he progressed through the club’s ranks, he became a sought-after player during this off-season.

Reports have indicated that several MLS teams and even some European clubs were interested in acquiring Haak.

In his farewell message, he reflected on his time at NYCFC, expressing heartfelt thanks for the opportunities and challenges that shaped him. “I feel like I gave my all every day,” he added. “I will continue to support and encourage the players.”

Fans won’t have to wait too long for Haak and NYCFC’s paths to cross again; they are set to face off in the opening match of the 2026 MLS regular season on February 22 against the Galaxy.
