Ryder Cup Matchup Takes Shape
The lineup for Sunday’s singles at the Ryder Cup seems to be taking form. Justin Rose from England recently secured a thrilling victory against U.S. Open Champion JJ Spaun to kick off the FedEx Cup playoffs at the St. Jude Championship, winning in sudden death.
To qualify for these playoffs, Rose managed to birdie four out of his last five holes and also scored two birdies during the playoff holes. Following his second birdie in the playoff, he celebrated with an upbeat fist pump. Meanwhile, Spaun’s seven-foot putt veered left, securing the win for Rose.
The leaderboard was fiercely competitive, with Tommy Fleetwood in contention until he bogeyed the 17th hole, which ultimately cost him a playoff spot. Scotty Schaeffler tied for third with a score of -15. The Memphis crowd at TPC Southwind resonated with “American” chants, as it was Spaun’s first Ryder Cup while Rose prepared for his seventh appearance in the last eight events.
“What an amazing 90 minutes,” Rose expressed. “I played some incredible golf, and I know when I’m at my best, I can compete.” Spaun demonstrated impressive skill too, sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on hole 17, closing with a score of 65.
“I was hanging in there as best as I could. He played a tremendous shot and I just wasn’t intended to make it,” said Spaun, reflecting on his first Ryder Cup spot.
Next up is the BMW Championship, which will feature the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings. Currently, Spaun and Rose rank third and fourth, trailing behind Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
