Justin Thomas announces split with caddie Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay days before Masters

Justin Thomas will have someone else carry the club next week at Augusta.

The two-time PGA Champion announced he was “parting ways” with caddy Jim “Bones” McKay.

“I will forever be grateful for everyone joining me in the bag in 2021,” Thomas said in a social media post. “What we were able to accomplish together, the 2022 PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup, were all unforgettable experiences. His wisdom on and off the course was a blessing during a tough period in my career, and he was there every step of the way. “

McKay served as Phil Mickelson’s caddy for 25 years before joining NBC and the Golf Channel as a commentator. But four years later he returned to the bag for Thomas.

Thomas, who came back two years ago to win his second major, struggled in 2023. His best finish was fourth place (one of two top 10 finishes) at the Phoenix Open in February of that year, and his best finish in a major was tied for 65th on the PGA. He missed out on the championship (missing the final three) but failed to qualify for the FedEx Cup.

However, Zach Johnson still chose to have him on his Ryder Cup team considering the veteran’s presence.

McKay has caddied for six major championships, Mickelson’s first five and Thomas’ 2022 win at Southern Hills. He was scheduled to caddy for the 26th time at the Masters next week.

Thomas’s distress has eased a bit, but he is still inconsistent. He missed out on the Genesis Invitational and The Players Championship, tied for 64th at last week’s Valspar Championship, but placed 3rd, 6th and 12th in four other tournaments this year. Finished in Thailand twice.
