Justin Thomas’ Journey in Golf: From Struggles to Resurgence
Two years ago, Justin Thomas found himself grappling with one of the toughest phases of his career. Just months after celebrating his second major victory at the PGA Championship held at Southern Hills, he faced significant challenges. During the 2023 season, he didn’t qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs and had only one top-10 finish in the 21 events he participated in.
In fact, he missed almost all the cuts, only managing to make it past the first round on a single occasion. The PGA Championship wasn’t particularly forgiving either; he ended up tied for 65th place.
Fast forward to the present, and things look quite different for Thomas. He made a notable comeback, finishing 14th in the rankings last year and recently placing fifth in a recent tournament, just behind names like Scotty Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Yet, there’s still a struggle when it comes to the majors. Since his PGA Championship win, he’s missed seven out of 13 cuts with varied finishes like T37, T53, T8, T31, and T36.
That said, he did grab the RBC Heritage title back in April, and his consistency has returned with five top-10 finishes this season. In a recent chat, Thomas reflected on the rollercoaster nature of golf, saying, “I think there are a lot of different ways to get through it, especially if you’re lucky enough to have a long career in any sport. There are a lot of ups and downs in golf.”
He emphasized the importance of growth, whether during good times or bad. “How do you grow in a good year? And how can you grow in a bad year? I feel like I’m trying to take the good and the bad from all my experiences on tour,” he noted.
In addition to golf, Thomas has also ventured into business by launching his own sunscreen line, WearSPF, which he says is quite pertinent for someone who spends considerable time outdoors. He even collaborated with the Kelce brothers on a unique garage beer project, which seems like a fun venture to combine with his summer plans.
Interestingly, Thomas is also dealing with melanoma, making his sunscreen initiative even more personal. “It was such a unique opportunity, and I felt like I could partner with them while embracing the outdoors and spending time on the golf course,” he explained.
As he strives for automatic bids for the upcoming Ryder Cup, it’s hard not to draw a contrast between his past and present. Just two years ago, he was striving for respect and a spot on the team under captain Zack Johnson, and now he’s aiming for a comeback with a substantial FedEx Cup prize also in sight.
In short, he’s taking small steps to fine-tune his game. “I’m really doing well. I don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” he shared. “I just need to refine things a bit and keep my focus sharper, especially on the tough days.” Thomas seems to be on a promising path, and golf fans are surely eager to see where he goes from here.
