Justin Thomas ties RBC Heritage 18-hole record with opening round of 61

The world of golf is still trying to figure out what happened in the final round of the Masters at Augusta last week. I live in a world where Rory McIlroy has a career, and although Grand Slams always feel inevitable, it’s so offensive to be real after all this time.

However, the tired people do not have a rest. The PGA Tour is not only returning to this week’s action, but also running off at the fifth signing event of the season at RBC Heritage. It’s always interesting to see who is thriving at Hilton Head right after the Masters.

Maybe Justin Thomas is asking himself those questions, or maybe he’s just happy with what he’s done. Thomas fired opening round 61 on Thursday, which was clearly incredible, but especially matched the 18-hole record of the RBC Heritage.

With the lack of wind due to ideal scoring conditions, at the time of this writing, multiple players have scored serious scores before the first round ends in context. After all, there’s a reason why this is a signature event.

Thomas doesn’t have the results that Rory has done this season, but he’s been through quite a few years so far. Thursday marked his second round of over 62 rounds this season, and he is the only player to have two cards this year.

This paced Hilton Head’s great tournament should be maintained.
