Justin Timberlake’s Stage Comeback
Justin Timberlake has made his return to performing live for the first time since he announced his diagnosis with Lyme disease.
The artist, known for hits like “SexyBack,” took the stage at the Recording Academy Honors on Thursday night. The event was a tribute to Pharrell Williams, hosted by the Black Music Collective.
“Anyone who comes in contact with or is on the same frequency as Pharrell Williams is forever changed,” Timberlake, 45, noted between songs.
He went on to express his gratitude, saying, “He came into my life when I was starting to enter my life, and the funny thing is, he made me feel like I belonged. Your creativity is unparalleled, your energy is contagious… You changed my life, and I will be forever grateful.” Pharrell was honored with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award that evening.
Timberlake has been on a break from live shows since wrapping up his Forget Tomorrow tour last July, after which he shared that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease.
In an Instagram statement, he mentioned, “I have been battling some health issues and have been diagnosed with Lyme disease. I won’t say this to gain any sympathy but rather to give context to what I’ve been dealing with.” He described the disease, which is transmitted by ticks, as “brutally debilitating, both mentally and physically.”
Timberlake reflected on how the diagnosis helped him understand his struggles, including intense nerve pain and feeling unusually fatigued while on stage.
This led him to a pivotal decision: to either stop touring or continue performing while addressing his health issues. He chose to keep acting, stating that the joy it brought him outweighed the temporary stress he was feeling.
He wrapped up by affirming his determination to continue, showcasing his mental strength and sharing meaningful moments with fans.
