Justin Verlander Announces Retirement

Justin Verlander has formally declared that he will retire at the end of this season. The future Hall of Famer had a challenging year, making just one appearance for Detroit due to injuries.

In a heartfelt post on social media, he expressed gratitude to the commissioner for his selection to the All-Star Game, stating, “This opportunity means a lot, and I know it will be a memorable moment for both me and my family.” Verlander acknowledged that this season has presented unprecedented challenges, saying, “I’ve always believed that if I could compete at my expected level, I would keep playing. I didn’t want to walk away due to an injury.” However, he has come to the realization that now is the right time to step back.

At 43 years old, Verlander has only pitched one game this season. After a rough outing, he was placed on the injured list for three months because of a hip issue. Although he looked close to a return, a hamstring strain has halted those hopes, and he remains sidelined.

Despite the Tigers’ disappointing record of 41-50, Verlander hopes to make a comeback before the season ends.

He reflected on his career, noting, “I want to dedicate the remainder of this season to the team. It feels right to conclude my journey where it started—with the organization that drafted me, the Detroit Tigers.” He also mentioned the invaluable lessons baseball has imparted on him, like discipline and the importance of adaptation.

Verlander concluded with gratitude for his teammates, coaches, and fans, saying, “Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. I couldn’t have done it without my family, especially my wife, Kate, who has stood by me through all the ups and downs.” He is eager to finish the season on his own terms.
