Justin Verlander Announces Retirement

Justin Verlander shared on Wednesday that this season will mark the end of his baseball career. Unfortunately, his return to the Detroit Tigers hasn’t unfolded as he had hoped.

This season, he struggled, giving up five earned runs in just three and two-thirds innings, partly due to injuries. More frustrating is the peculiar welcome he received—a bikini tribute from Sports Illustrated before his first scheduled home start in April.

Verlander ended up missing that particular start and hasn’t played since his initial outing this season back in March against Arizona. His retirement announcement came shortly after being named a “Legend Pick” for his 10th All-Star Game, as Major League Baseball noted.

His departure from the game seems to have been confirmed through a reflective look back at his impressive career, often hailed as Hall of Fame-worthy. Verlander was named the AL Rookie of the Year in 2006, won the MVP in 2011, and is a three-time Cy Young Award recipient. He also boasts two World Series rings and three no-hitters, among many other significant accomplishments.

As a player, he ranks eighth all-time in strikeouts and could surpass Don Sutton if he adds just 21 more strikeouts to his record. While his career highlights are celebrated, it’s hard to overlook the notable role his wife, Kate Upton, has played throughout his journey. She’s become a legend in her own right.

In his announcement, he graciously acknowledged that none of this would have been achievable without her support. Even though his career may not have concluded in the fairytale way he envisioned, it’s been a remarkable journey. And, let’s be honest, as his retirement is discussed online, there’s always applause for Mrs. Verlander in the mix.
