Personal Information of Over 13 Million Kaiser Permanente Members May Have Been Compromised
Kaiser Permanente has announced that the personal details of approximately 13.4 million members might have been shared with third-party vendors. Notifications will be sent to those whose information could have been affected. The health organization, located in Oakland, revealed that an online tool on its website and mobile application contributed to this data breach, potentially sending information to companies like Google, Microsoft, and X.
In light of this breach, Kaiser has reached a proposed settlement of $46 million to address a class action lawsuit claiming the healthcare provider breached patient privacy.
The allegations state that sensitive data was exposed through its digital platforms between 2017 and 2024. The lawsuit consists of multiple claims that Kaiser utilized tracking codes on its website and app—codes that supposedly transmitted sensitive information such as IP addresses and personal health data without user consent.
While Kaiser denies any wrongdoing, they opted for the settlement to avoid the costs and uncertainty associated with ongoing legal proceedings. The court provisionally approved the settlement in December 2025.
Who Is Eligible for Payment?
The settlement could impact around 13 million current and former members in states like California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, DC.
How the Payment Structure Works
Kaiser noted that eligible members will automatically be part of the settlement class; however, action is needed to claim any money owed. They stated, “If you are a member of the Settlement Class (eligible individuals are automatically included) and wish to receive payments from the Settlement, you must submit a valid claim form by March 12, 2026.” More information can be found on the official payment website.
Payments will be based on a pro rata system, determined by the total number of valid claims submitted, along with remaining funds allocated by the court, minus legal fees. Expected payouts for eligible members are estimated to range between $20 and $40.
How to File a Claim
If you think you qualify as a member of the Settlement Class, follow these steps to claim your share of the funds:
- Check Your Email: Look for messages from your payment administrator containing a unique Payment Class Member ID needed for confirmation.
- Submit Your Claim: Go to the Kaiser Privacy Settlement website and complete the online form before the deadline of March 12, 2026.
- Select Your Payment Method: During the process, you can choose how you’d like to receive your payment, whether via direct deposit, Venmo, or check.
- Update Your Privacy Settings: To minimize future data sharing, log into your Kaiser account and review your Cookie Settings to opt out of third-party tracking.
