Kalen DeBoer reacts after Alabama narrowly avoids second straight SEC upset: ‘Proud of these guys’

The South Carolina Gamecocks gave it their all against No. 7 Alabama on Saturday in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama entered the matchup against its Southeastern Conference foes as the overwhelming favorite, but first-year head coach Karen DeBoer quickly realized that the odds were not necessarily in her team's favor.

However, South Carolina quarterback Lanoris Sellers made a late interception to give Alabama a 27-25 victory and help the Crimson Tide avoid a second consecutive SEC loss.

One possible adverse bounce that DeBoer mentioned occurred when Alabama missed an onside kick. The mishap allowed the Gamecocks to get the ball back and gave the underdog team a chance to pull off a monumental upset.

Sellers hit Nick Harbaugh for a 31-yard touchdown with 43 seconds left, but the Gamecocks were unable to convert a 2-point shot.

Sellers' interception was the result of a desperate drive into the end zone with 13 seconds left. Alabama defensive back Domani Jackson intercepted the pass, effectively ending the game.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe rushed for a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and then found Jermie Bernard for a 34-yard late score, helping the Crimson Tide survive the scare.

Last week, the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the University of Alabama 40-35, recording perhaps the biggest win in program history.

The Crimson Tide entered the Week 6 contest as the top-ranked team in the nation. On September 28th, the University of Alabama held off a fierce comeback from the Georgia Bulldogs and jumped into first place.

Alabama heads to Knoxville next week to take on Tennessee, the Crimson Tide's fourth consecutive SEC opponent. The Volantes entered this week as the No. 8 team in the country.
