Michigan Football Faces Turmoil

Michigan football is currently in a tough situation. On Wednesday, the university decided to let go of head coach Sherone Moore, 39, following revelations about her husband’s inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He has since been incarcerated on assault charges.

This scandal emerged just a few weeks ahead of the transfer portal’s opening scheduled for January 2. It leaves current players and potential recruits uncertain about their future, as many who had planned to play under Moore might now look for opportunities elsewhere. I can only imagine how unsettling that must be for those involved.

Rising freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood’s prospects might also be in question, which adds another layer to the situation.

Interestingly, amid all this chaos, Michigan lacks a permanent superintendent, as Santa J. Ono departed for the University of Florida back in May. For now, Domenico Grasso steps in as the interim president.

The athletic director, Warde Manuel, is also facing scrutiny—not just for this latest incident but previous hiring decisions as well, including the controversial recruitment of gymnastics consultant Rhonda Fehn in 2019.

Fehn testified that during her time with USA Gymnastics, a coach informed her about Larry Nassar’s abuse of gymnasts. Although she reported it to USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny, she did not alert the authorities. Understandably, this caused quite an uproar.

The aftermath? Michigan severed ties with Fehn the very next day.

Interestingly, Manuel, who is now 57, had just received a contract extension last year, locking him in until June 2030.

Moore, who had been part of Jim Harbaugh’s staff for six years, stepped up as the head coach in 2024 when Harbaugh left for an NFL role with the Chargers.

Now, Michigan finds itself on the hunt for a new coach, just two seasons after clinching a national championship. One name surfacing in discussions is Karen DeBoer, the current head coach at Alabama.

NBC Sports college football insider Nicole Auerbach mentioned on social media that DeBoer would certainly be a top candidate for Michigan, with MLive echoing that sentiment in their list of potential replacements.

DeBoer, 51, is already in a high-profile position, having succeeded Nick Saban at Alabama. However, after an initial 9-4 record in his first season and a contentious appearance in the College Football Playoff following a decisive loss to Georgia, the pressure could mount if Alabama faces an early exit in the postseason.

No. 9 Alabama (10-3) is set to compete against Oklahoma State (10-2) in the first round next Friday.
