Kamala Against Nippon’s Acquisition Of U.S. Steel

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has 45Number President Donald Trump has argued that U.S. Steel should remain American-owned and operated.

Speaking to a crowd in Pittsburgh on Monday, Harris asserted that Joe Biden and Trump oppose Nippon Steel's takeover of U.S. Steel.

The United Steelworkers union has voiced opposition to the deal since it was announced in December.

Nippon Steel argues that buying U.S. Steel would benefit American workers and bolster its supply lines against pressure from China.

She pledged to move the U.S. headquarters to Pittsburgh, home of U.S. Steel.

“U.S. Steel is a historic American company, and maintaining a strong American steel company is critical to our country,” Harris said.

“I completely agree with President Biden that U.S. Steel should remain American-owned and American-operated, and I will always support American steelworkers,” she continued.

The president has the power to block certain cross-border transactions on national security grounds.

But it's unclear whether the next person to take over the Oval Office will view Japan, a close American ally, as a threat.
