Former Vice President Kamala Harris faced backlash on social media from conservatives after her statement regarding the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. She criticized the Trump administration and referred to the unrest as “overwhelmingly peaceful.”
“Los Angeles is my home,” Harris wrote on Sunday. Protests unfolded in the city for several days, spurred by federal agents detaining undocumented immigrants and calls for the National Guard’s deployment.
Harris expressed concern about the situation, stating, “The National Guard’s deployment is a dangerous escalation aimed at inciting chaos.” She described the current administration’s actions as part of a cruel agenda designed to create division and panic.
During the protests, Harris emphasized that “protest is a powerful tool” and noted that many demonstrations defending immigrant rights were indeed peaceful. She voiced support for those defending fundamental freedoms.
However, her comments sparked quick criticism from conservatives and Trump supporters online. Guy Benson, a Fox News contributor, remarked, “The country really dodged a bullet in November,” suggesting the administration’s response was misguided.
Another post from Benson mentioned a sentiment that the political landscape was failing due to a focus on appeasing protestors rather than condemning violence. He criticized the narrative surrounding the protests.
Further backlash came from individuals like Katie Pavlich, who commented on Harris’ leadership. Some influencers on social media pointed out the contradiction between Harris’ characterization of the protests and the violence witnessed, including images of burning cars and clashes with law enforcement.
Republican officials and commentators expressed disdain towards Harris’ apparent alignment with protestors, with one calling her the “most incompetent vice president in history.” California GOP candidate Chad Bianco claimed that it was inaccurate to pin the riots on Trump, clarifying that he was not responsible for the violence occurring on the streets.
On the flip side, law enforcement officers noted that some individuals were targeted during the protests, which included violence against ICE officers. Reports indicated serious incidents where federal agents were injured.
The riots were sparked by ICE’s actions in California aimed at arresting violent offenders. Local officials like Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the federal sweeps, labeling them as reckless and detrimental to public trust.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security questioned the local leadership’s priorities, arguing they seemed to prioritize the rights of criminals over community safety. Meanwhile, multiple arrests were made throughout the riots.
