Kamala Harris Critiques Disney During Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Suspension
Kamala Harris recently expressed her criticism of Disney at the end of an episode featuring late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.
In a conversation with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, she stated, “I’m a lifelong civil servant… but I’ve been involved with the private sector for quite some time.” This was her first interview following the anticipated presidential battle against Trump for the 2024 election.
Harris shared her belief that strong corporate entities should act as safeguards for democracy and its institutions.
Disney’s ABC network has been under the company’s ownership since 1994.
Interestingly, Harris has longstanding ties to the Waldens, a couple she described as “extraordinary friends,” and their friendship dates back to the 1980s. They’ve supported her political campaigns for many years.
Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, has also made substantial donations to Democratic causes over the years.
This isn’t the first time a Democrat has criticized ABC; last week, the network “indefinitely” suspended Kimmel’s show. He’s expected to return on Tuesday with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
However, amidst ongoing tensions, Sinclair and Nexstar—who together control a significant percentage of ABC affiliates—have opted not to air the latest episode as Kimmel remains firm about not apologizing for his statements.
“Perhaps they’re trying to avoid scrutiny if their merger goes through,” Harris mentioned during her discussion with Maddow.
She urged that at some point, these institutions need to stand up for those who rely on them, as integrity is crucial in resisting tyranny. She alluded to how the federal government has been misused to serve personal interests.
Nexstar is in the process of obtaining regulatory approval from Trump’s FCC following its acquisition of Tegna and 13 ABC stations, positioning it to become a leading owner in the market.
Sinclair currently retains the title of the largest ABC affiliate owner.
As Kimmel prepares for his return, he continues to face backlash over the situation. Reports suggest he will address the controversy during his monologue but will remain steadfast in not issuing an apology.
Just prior to the announcement of Kimmel’s show suspension, FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr hinted at the possibility of the FCC taking action against ABC and Disney.
Kerr stated there are different paths to consider, depending on how straightforward or complicated the process becomes.
In a surprising twist, following Kimmel’s suspension, Trump expressed his support for this decision, commenting that the government could rescind broadcasting licenses from networks perceived as oppositional.
Regarding Kimmel’s monologue on September 15th, it sparked considerable discussion, and Kerr later clarified that ABC did not request Kimmel to take any specific action.
He emphasized the networks’ obligations to serve the public interest, suggesting that Kimmel’s comments did not meet this standard as they might have misled viewers.
Following this, court documents revealed insights from Tyler Robinson’s mother, indicating her son had adopted a more political stance and had begun leaning to the left.
