Kamala Harris decides not to run for governor in 2026, but keeps options open for 2028

Kamala Harris Declines 2026 Governor Run, Eyes 2028 Presidential Bid

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she will not be running for governor of California in 2026, effectively closing that door. However, her choice to stay out of next year’s election keeps the possibility of a second presidential campaign alive for 2028.

In her statement, Harris mentioned, “At this time, my leadership and public services are not listed in the elected offices.” This comes after her brief foray into the 2024 presidential race, where she ultimately withdrew amidst questions regarding her political stamina and strategy.

Kamal Harris Steps Back from California Race

“I look forward to going out and listening to the American people, electing Democrats who are fearlessly fighting, and sharing details about my own plans for the next few months,” she said. After the last election, where she lost alongside President Donald Trump, Harris returned to California to collaborate with her close advisors.

Potential Contenders for 2028

Some of her advisors and political analysts had suggested she might run for governor in 2026, which would be significant given California’s status as the most populous state and its substantial economy. Still, that concern is now off the table.

If Harris launched her campaign for the 2028 presidential race, she’d be entering as a prominent figure, with the potential to draw in a large field of candidates. Her fundraising capabilities from previous cycles could also provide her an advantage.

“She’s certainly going to be a very serious candidate in the primary in 2028 if she runs,” a Democratic strategist mentioned to Fox News Digital. Meanwhile, an anonymous strategist indicated that many believe Harris faced a challenging position in 2024 and may have a better shot at running on her own terms in the future.

Yet, it’s worth noting that Harris might still carry some baggage from the 2024 campaign, particularly as many Democrats seek a fresh start following losses not just in the White House but also in Congress.

A Fresh Start for Democrats?

Amidst this backdrop, there’s a strong push within the party for a new direction. One Democratic consultant expressed that, “If you’re trying to go a different path for the party, it’s hard to pick someone who’s backed down and lost to Trump.” The idea is that the party needs a reset, perhaps signaling a desire for a new generation of leadership.

As Harris navigated her own challenges, she appeared somewhat uneasy in front of the public, often needing to support President Biden. Recent comments from Republican lawmaker James Kommer suggested she could be under scrutiny in the future, reflecting the ongoing political tensions.

While Harris has given serious consideration to her decision regarding the governor’s race, other Democrats have already begun positioning themselves for the 2028 presidential contest. Notable figures include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and Senator Cory Booker, among others.

Ultimately, even though Harris has decided against a 2026 run, she has expressed her commitment to remaining actively involved in political life.

Comments from Political Allies

Donna Brazile, a former chair of the Democratic National Committee and one of Harris’s advisors, emphasized the relevance of former vice presidents in modern politics, stating that they often take on significant roles in various sectors. “There are so many gaps that the former vice president can meet, whether as a private citizen or a public servant,” she noted.

This decision is just one of many in Harris’s evolving political journey.
