Kamala Harris faced criticism after an old video about 'two letters' and AI gained popularity.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is facing ridicule after a clip of her discussing artificial intelligence resurfaced following her recent call to slow its development. Harris, who previously held the position of AI czar in the Biden administration, shared an extensive statement on AI, urging President Donald Trump to “do his job to protect America’s interests” by negotiating a treaty with nations like China. This treaty would aim to curb misuse of AI, regulate its rapid advancement, and establish global testing standards.

Social media users began recalling her 2023 explanation of AI, where she remarked, “AI is kind of a fancy thing… First of all, it’s two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it’s about machine learning.” She further elaborated on the importance of understanding what information goes into AI systems, which can influence outcomes and decisions made by these technologies.

After her recent post, conservative influencer “Western Lensman” shared the 2023 video, hinting that Harris’s insight into AI seemed lacking. National security expert Kyle Bass chimed in, expressing skepticism about her ability to have authored such statements, suggesting that her typical discourse is far removed from what was presented.

In another clip, Harris discussed cloud storage, saying, “No longer are you necessarily keeping those private files in some file cabinet… It’s on your laptop, and it’s then, therefore, up here in this cloud.” This further fueled mockery, with various commentators questioning her grasp on complex topics.

In her recent AI statement, she warned that AI is “advancing at an alarming speed” and emphasized the necessity of a careful approach to ensure it serves public interests. Harris stressed that slowing down development should not hinder the technology’s potential to provide life-saving solutions in areas like healthcare. She advocated for establishing appropriate safeguards to maintain human oversight of AI.

Alongside Harris, former President Barack Obama has also called for stricter AI regulations, voicing concerns during a private fundraiser about the technology’s rapid pace and potential risks without sufficient oversight. He pointed out that while AI could have significant benefits, like accelerating drug development, it’s crucial to manage it responsibly.

In response to the growing calls for AI regulation, Trump dismissed the need for additional restrictions, asserting that strong leadership, rather than limitations, is what AI requires. He described the concerns surrounding AI as part of a “sick conspiracy,” emphasizing that America must maintain its lead in AI over other nations, particularly China.
