Kamala Harris Shares Thoughts on Texas Redistricting — It Doesn’t End Favorably

Kamala Harris Talks Texas Redistricting

On August 6, former Vice President Kamala Harris met with a young Latino leader to discuss issues affecting Texas, but some observers noted she seemed somewhat scattered in her comments.

A large group of Texas Democrats had recently vacated their homes, effectively cutting off the quorum required to pass a redistricting map that would enable Republicans to create five new GOP-majority districts. Harris shared a video of the conversation on X over the weekend, where she accused Texas Republicans of “cheating.”

“The efforts and fighting back from Republicans in Texas will require all of us,” Harris expressed. “I’m incredibly proud of our state lawmakers who are showing immense courage in this battle.”

As the discussion evolved, participants pressed Harris on the implications of the new map, pointing out how it could slice the Latino community in half and mute their voices. “I think there’s truth in what you’re saying about its effectiveness,” she replied. “What they’re doing feels like cheating. They act like they have a call saying, ‘Hey, let’s start this line again.’”

Harris argued that the proposed redistricting would disenfranchise both Hispanic and Black Texans, effectively diluting their votes. “It’s not a census year, but it’s a crucial year for passing significant bills. They apparently want to bend the rules a bit,” she added. “But I must say, Texas Senators, it takes a lot of courage.”

After a disruptive two-week absence, the Texas Democrats finally returned to the state capital, claiming they had successfully hindered the redistricting efforts during the first special session.

The Texas House Democrat Caucus indicated that they were re-entering the fray to oppose what they called racist gerrymandering, alluding to the pressures from Republican Governor Greg Abbott and former President Donald Trump.

This struggle in Texas has sparked a larger national discussion about congressional redistricting. California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, has responded by pledging to redraw his state’s maps to ensure fair representation against Texas’s changes.
