Kamala Harris Shows Loyalty in Strong Indication That She's Still in the Game

Harris Aligns with Progressive Movement

Former Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be strategically positioning herself to connect with the Democratic Party’s emerging leadership. Following unexpected wins by progressive candidates, there are reports that Harris is reaching out to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their increasing number of challenging candidates. She has even hinted at the possibility of running for president again in 2028. This move suggests she’s trying to sync up with more radical factions aiming to influence the Democratic Party.

Recently, Harris had a phone conversation with Democratic Mayor Zoran Mamdani of New York, focusing on the party’s future and ongoing discussions. Mamdani acknowledged that they had a brief exchange, which, while perhaps not groundbreaking, highlights her outreach to key progressive figures, especially since several of his supporters include DSA candidates who have gained traction, one even defeating an incumbent in the New York primary.

In a broader sense, Harris’s actions might be interpreted as an effort to solidify her standing as she looks toward 2028. This aligns with comments from political analysts suggesting Mamdani could become a significant player in New York politics.

Moreover, it seems Harris has also met with notable progressives, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Abbas Allawi, a co-founder of the Non-Commit Movement. This comes after the group had previously declined to endorse her as a presidential candidate following a controversy over representation at the Democratic National Convention.

Allawi mentioned that he also conveyed his belief during his conversation with Harris regarding the use of American tax dollars, emphasizing humanitarian perspectives that some feel are essential when engaging with international policies.

Across the board, DSA-backed candidates won a number of significant races in the 2026 Democratic primaries, resulting in surprising defeats for some longstanding party figures. In one particularly notable case, DSA member Dalializa Avila Chevalier faced off against Congressman Adriano Espaillat, and her harsh criticism of Harris in the past quickly became well-known. Chevalier later expressed regret for her words, reflecting a complex and perhaps contradictory relationship within the party.

These political developments are shaking up the status quo within the Democratic establishment. The progressive agenda, which includes debating issues like immigration and community reform, directly challenges the traditional views that Harris has aligned with in the past. This gives rise to a pressing question: can Harris adapt and unite a now-divided party as she contemplates her future?

Those watching her moves might find in her recent overtures to the left a clear indication that she remains actively engaged in the political arena, rather than retreating from it entirely.
