Vice President Kamala Harris has repeatedly repeated the same speeches during the election campaign, fueling criticism that she cannot deliver them without a script prepared by her aides.
This pattern was on full display during Harris’ speech in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, when she introduced Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.
Her opening remarks were similar to those she used when she spoke for the first time at her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware last month.
Here’s what she said in Philadelphia (including comments from the audience):
Now, as many of you know, before I was elected Vice President or Senator, I was elected Attorney General, and before that I was elected District Attorney. [Applause] Prior to that, I was a court prosecutor. [Applause] So in those roles I was confronted with all kinds of perpetrators. [Applause] A predator who abuses women. [Boos] Scammers deceiving consumers. [Boos] A cheater who breaks the rules for his own gain. [Boos] So listen to what I have to say. [applause] — I know what type of person Donald Trump is.
Here’s what she said in Wilmington:
As you all know, before I was elected Vice President, before I was elected to the United States Senate, I was elected Attorney General, as I mentioned in California, and before that I was a trial attorney. In those roles, I confronted all kinds of perpetrators — predators who abuse women, con artists who deceive consumers, con artists who break the rules for their own personal gain. So hear me when I say that I know what type of person Donald Trump is.
Here’s what she said in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday:
As many of you know, before I was elected Vice President, before I was elected Senator, I was elected Attorney General, before that I was elected District Attorney, and before that I was a trial attorney. [Applause] In these roles, I’ve faced off against all kinds of perpetrators. Predators who abuse women. Scammers who deceive consumers. Con artists who break the rules for their own personal gain. [Boos] So Detroiters, listen to me: I know what type of person Donald Trump is!
And on Wednesday in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, she said:
As many of you know, before I was elected Vice President, before I was elected Senator, I was elected Attorney General, and before that a District Attorney, and before that a Court Attorney. And in those roles, I faced off against criminals of all kinds — predators who abused women, con artists who defrauded consumers, con artists who broke the rules for their own personal gain. So hear me when I say that I know someone like Donald Trump.
Politicians have a set of catchphrases they frequently use as part of their “street talk.” Former President Donald Trump always ended his speeches with a similar conclusion, leading to the catchphrase, “Make America Great Again.”
The difference is that while Trump’s speeches are largely ad-libbed, Kamala Harris never goes off script. She never holds a press conference or sits down for an interview. She gives the impression that her speeches are entirely scripted.
