Kamala Harris has a 33-point lead over the nearest 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, according to reports vote From Echelon Insight.
The breakdown is as follows:
- Vice President Kamala Harris — 41%
- California Governor Gavin Newsom — 8%
- Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro — 7%
- Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg — 6%
- Minnesota Governor Tim Walz — 6%
One aspect of the scenario would explain why Democratic voters still support her despite her decisive loss to President-elect Donald Trump two weeks ago. She still has the highest profile. She has been vice president for four years. She has never worked at McDonald's. She received 74 million votes. You could also argue that she did pretty well, even though it took just over 100 days to put together the campaign.
The other side of the argument is the fact that Democrats have significant areas of weakness. Newsom has done a terrible job governing California. Buttigieg is a weirdo who fell into the job of Secretary of Transportation. The waltz is even stranger. Mr. Shapiro is Jewish, which poses a problem for the pro-Hamas wing of the party.
Most of all, does anyone look at Kamala Harris and see that she is ready to run for president again? Her first attempt at becoming president in 2020 was a disaster, and she ended up dropping out before a single vote was cast. And while some may sympathize with Kamala being thrust into the middle of the 2024 campaign without warning, one fact remains. It's that she never improved as a candidate.
Over a hundred-odd days, she never got better at answering questions, talking to voters, or sitting down for friendly interviews. It was shocking to see a grown woman with a law degree who had spent decades in the public eye come under fire in one softball interview after another.
Listen, 41 percent may make her their favorite, but 59 percent of Democrats want someone else. Of course, 92% don't want Newsom in second place, so 41% support would be considered enough unless a better option emerges.
Overall, I think this poll shows how weak the Democratic presidential race is. Harris had $1.5 billion, all of the corporate media, all of Hollywood, and most of the big tech companies behind her, and yet she lost the popular vote and every battleground state. If Democrats see her as their best hope for 2028, that means they don't expect much from other candidates. No one excites them.
However, four years is a long time, especially in the world of politics. Just as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump suddenly appeared out of nowhere, attractive Democrats can appear out of nowhere.
Anyway, I try to stay out of the prediction business, but I would be shocked if Kamala Harris were the 2028 candidate. Of course, if President Trump carries out his policies, the peace and prosperity will make Vice President-elect J.D. Vance a candidate in 2028, and Democrats may see Kamala as the perfect victim.
