The city of San Francisco, where Vice President Kamala Harris launched her political career, will evaluate about 100 monuments to decide whether to remove them or replace them with new ones.
The debate over the city's monuments began with the 2018 removal of the “Early Days” sculpture from the Civic Center's Pioneers Monument because it depicted a Native American seated in front of Spanish Catholic missionaries. The move gained momentum amid the racial justice movements that arose in 2020 in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. That year, crowds across the country toppled statues honoring Confederate leaders from the Civil War, which critics argued paid homage to the country's racist past.
As Breitbart News reported at the time, rioters toppled a statue of Ulysses S. Grant, who led the Union Army in the Civil War and brought about the emancipation of black slaves in America, in the name of “racial justice.” Chronicle He noted that other statues have also been toppled, including those of St. Junipero Serra and Francis Scott Key.
Mayor London Breed has established a commission to look into the issue of statues and monuments and has recommended that a new review be carried out.
