Ella Emov, the stepdaughter of Kamala Harris, who recently ran for president, described her experience voting in the New York City mayoral primary as “traumatic.” This was particularly poignant for her, as it took place at the same polling station that backed her stepmother in her race against President Donald Trump.
In a social media video, Emov shared her feelings, saying, “I feel a lot of hope right now.” After casting her vote, she posted an update, exclaiming, “We did that.”
She elaborated, expressing a mix of emotions: “I feel a huge combination of emotions. I’m really nervous, but also very excited. It was amazing to see New York come together like this in support of Zoran.”
This primary has marked a significant moment for New York State Sen. Zoran Mamdani (D), who identifies as a democratic socialist, as he has “made history” by winning the Democratic primary in a city predominantly run by Democrats.
Mamdani received recognition for his campaigning efforts, even from opponents. “I want to commend the Assemblyman for running a smart, impactful campaign,” he stated after his own defeat. “Tonight belongs to him. He deserved this win.”
His campaign has been notable for its bold proposals, including ideas for city-owned grocery stores aimed at lowering food costs, as highlighted by various news reports.
Mamdani’s campaign website outlines his platform, stressing the struggle people face with grocery prices.
The website advocates for “a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on maintaining low prices without profit motives. This would allow savings to go directly to shoppers, avoiding rental and property tax costs. It’s possible to reallocate public funds to genuinely offer ‘public options.’
He has also stated that “queer release means compensating the police.”
Mamdani has garnered support from prominent figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT). “You challenged political, economic, and media powers and came out on top,” Sanders remarked. “We’re now on the path to winning the general election.”
