Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator's wife reportedly shot by their son several times.

Incident Involving Eric Bieniemy’s Family

Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, was absent from practice on Monday following his son’s arrest on serious charges. His son is accused of allegedly shooting his mother at their home in Virginia.

Authorities were called to a residence in Ashburn around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, where they discovered 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, aged 27, has been taken into custody and faces charges for using a firearm in connection with a felony that resulted in serious injury, as well as discharging a weapon inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bail at the local detention center.

Mia Bieniemy was transported to the hospital for urgent medical care.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that Mia called 911 to report the incident.

“She was injured multiple times,” Sheriff Mike Chapman stated. “It’s crucial that we conduct a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances—what happened and what led to this.” He added that they are in the process of uncovering all pertinent details.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed his concern for the Bieniemy family during a press briefing after practice.

“Our hearts go out to Eric and his family. We’re keeping them in our thoughts and prayers,” Reid shared. “I can’t really get into specifics, but sometimes life throws unexpected challenges, and Eric has a strong support system here. Only time will reveal what happens next.” He described Mia as a “saint” and emphasized her special role in their lives.

Bieniemy has served as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2018 to 2022. He recently became the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders for the 2023 season. His future coaching positions include UCLA Bruins in 2024 and as running backs coach for the Chicago Bears in 2025.

The son is set to appear in court on August 31st.
