Kansas woman convicted of murdering Army husband at Fort Riley

The Kansas woman was convicted by a federal ju judge in February 2024 for shooting and killing an army soldier's husband at her home at Fort Riley.

On Friday, officials from the U.S. Lawyers' Office district in Kansas announced that 31-year-old Margaret E. Chafe has been found guilty of murder in her second degree for shooting and killing her husband, Army SPC. Greg Shaffe was a soldier assigned to Fort Riley, a military facility in Kansas.

According to Shafe's obituary, he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head that he supported while on base on February 19, 2024. He was declared dead the next day. Shafe was scheduled to deploy to Poland with a new squadron when his wife had to be hospitalized due to pregnancy complications.

“Greg stayed by Margaret's side while he was hospitalized in Kansas City for pregnancy and for his stay in Sidona's NICU,” the obituary reads. “Greg loved his family so much, and Sidona was Greg's pride and joy. She was truly a daddy girl.”

Shafe lived with his one-year-old daughter and stepdaughter Margaret, the obituary says.

According to Shelton, one of Greg Shaffe's brothers is about to adopt his younger child, but his nine-year-old stepdaughter will live with her biological father.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting and motivation.

Officials added that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Office of Emergency Services have investigated the case.
